How our auto loan calculator works
Enter your loan amount, down payment, preferred term, and estimated credit range, then tap "Calculate My Monthly Payment" to see an instant estimate — no contact information required just to calculate. Unlike generic calculators that use made-up rate assumptions, our estimator is anchored to real, published industry data rather than arbitrary numbers.
Once you see your estimate, you can optionally request real offers from licensed lenders by submitting your contact details below the calculation. Your actual rate will depend on the specific lender, your full credit profile, and the vehicle you finance.
Data & methodology
Our monthly payment estimates are built on average new-car APRs by credit tier, as reported in Experian's State of the Automotive Finance Market report for Q2 2026 — the most recent quarter available at time of writing. For used vehicles, we add an adjustment based on the gap Experian reported between new-car and used-car average rates that same quarter.
| Credit tier (as selected in the form) | Est. new-car APR used | Experian Q2 2026 reference point |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent (720+) | ~5.0% | Superprime avg. 4.41% |
| Good (660–719) | ~6.8% | All-tier new-car avg. 6.35% |
| Fair (600–659) | ~10.5% | Nonprime range |
| Building (<600) | ~16.1% | Subprime / deep subprime avg. |
Source: Experian State of the Automotive Finance Market, Q2 2026. Used-vehicle estimates add roughly 4.8 percentage points, reflecting the gap between Experian's reported new-car (6.35%) and used-car (11.19%) average rates for the same quarter. These are editorial averages for estimation purposes only — actual lender quotes vary by borrower, vehicle, term, and region.
How auto financing works
Financing a car typically involves a down payment, a credit check, and an interest rate (APR) that depends heavily on your credit score, loan term, and lender. Rates can vary significantly between banks, credit unions, and dealership financing — even for buyers with similar credit profiles.
New car loans
Typically come with lower APRs than used car loans, and longer terms are more widely available.
Used car loans
Often carry a slightly higher rate than new car loans, and terms are usually capped based on the vehicle's age.
Refinancing
Can lower your monthly payment or total interest if your credit has improved or rates have dropped since your original loan.
Lease buyouts
Let you finance the remaining value of a leased vehicle you want to keep at the end of the lease term.
What affects your loan rate and approval odds
- Credit score — the single biggest factor in the APR you're offered; higher scores typically unlock significantly lower rates.
- Down payment — a larger down payment reduces the loan amount and can improve your approval odds and rate.
- Loan term — longer terms lower your monthly payment but usually increase the total interest paid over the life of the loan.
- Debt-to-income ratio — lenders look at your existing monthly debt obligations relative to your income.
- Vehicle age and value — older or higher-mileage vehicles can come with shorter maximum terms and higher rates.
